How to Play Rockabilly Guitar 7 Easy Songs for Beginners
How to Play Rockabilly Guitar 7 Easy Songs for Beginners Megan L. Ready to learn about rock and rolls cousin from the south? If so, youre in the right place! In this article, music teacher Christopher S. explores some of the most influential rockabilly songs of our time and shows you how to play them on guitar The History of Rockabilly The rock and roll style, dubbed rockabilly, is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music. It dates back to the early 1950âs and comes from the good ol USA, especially from the south. Its a blend of sounds from Western musical styles like country, sometimes bluegrass styles, and that of rhythm and blues. The styleâs name in itself comes from the combination of ârockâ (from the 1950s) and âhillbillyâ music, a common term being used to describe country music of the 40s and 50s. This style was very important for the development of rock and roll music, and it was the basis and influence of many famous bands from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It was a style which was, in a sense, a rite of passage to play if you wanted to play rock and roll. The styles defining features include strong rhythms, vocal twangs, and often the use of tape echo. It also tends to have fast lyrics and distorted guitars, which gives it a progressive feel, thus attractibg the ears of young listeners. Notable Rockabilly Players The first major artists to be associated playing rockabilly music were Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Bob Luman, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The style started a legacy of rock and roll which spawned a variety of sub-styles and influencing styles such as punk rock. If you want to play rock and roll the way famous guitarists such as Jimi Page, Jeff Beck, and Jimi Hendrix did, then you have to learn, at minimum, the basics and some songs by the very first rock and rollers who played rockabilly. Here are seven rockabilly songs that are easy to learn and will teach you how to play rockabilly guitar. 1) Hello Mary Lou by Ricky Nelson This song was recorded and released in 1961 in California. Although its one of the later and poppier songs in our timeline of rockabilly music, this song is easy to play on the guitar and makes for a good intro to the musical style. Below is a guitar tab showing how to play it. Youâll notice most of the song is played with chords. You just have to get that good country guitar rhythm down, and then theres a short but sweet solo to learn. 2) Be-Bop-A-Lula by Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps This song is a classic and probably one of the slower tunes of the rockabilly scene. It has a very swampy but typical singing style with country-influenced twangy guitar sounds. Below is the chord chart for the song. The strumming is a very simple down strum on the beat of a 4/4 rhythm. Its a very easy song to learn because of its slow tempo. 3) Train Kept A-Rollinâ by Johnny Burnette and The Rock and Roll Trio This is a great song because it really shows the rebellious side of the rockabilly sound and its true roots as the precursor to rock and roll. It begins with a rockinâ guitar lick and strummed chords with the rumbling sound and rhythm of a train. This song was considered almost a rite of passage for bands to play in the 70s and 80s. The well-known band The Yardbirds, with guitarists Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, also made this song well-known in the late 60s. The easy part about this song is that you can almost get away with playing the chords by using only the top and the bottom string. Below is the intro riff and the chord charts. 4) Whole Lotta Shakinâ Going On by Jerry Lee Lewis This is another great tune that was a hit in 1957. The song acutely has its compositional origins from a pianist and club owner named Dave âCurleeâ Williams however, Lewis had been performing it and he released it on his recording session for Sun Records which made it hit the Billboard magazine charts. The chords are played with piano but there are guitar licks and chord figures strumming throughout. Below are the tabs for the guitar parts. 5) Blue Suede Shoes by Carl Perkins This is a very well-known rockabilly song released in 1955, made infamous by the one and only, Elvis Presley. It was released only a year after the Carl Perkins version. This song is very easy to play because its mostly stop and go chords. It has a driving bluesy rhythm, which is easy to strum. Below are the chords to Elvis Presleyâs version of the song. This would be a good version to learn because its the one that most people will recognize. 6) Ooby Dooby by Roy Orbison This is yet another classic, well-known tune by a classic artist. This song was released again by Sun Records. It has a swampy blues rhythm and sounds great at both slow and faster tempos. Roy was even known to perform this song at various tempos. The original has some great rockabilly licks that, if youre learning this style of guitar, theyre essential licks to learn! Below are the tabs for this song. 7) Twenty Flight Rock by Eddie Cochran This is a comical song which was actually released in the comedy film titled The Girl Canât Help It in 1956. Its a song about a man who is complaining about seeing his girlfriend who lives on the 20th floor of an apartment build with no elevator. Its a very cool song and actually was the song that got Paul McCartney into the Beatles. McCartney retells the story of how, at the auditions to enter the Beatles, he played that song and John was so impressed that he actually knew all the words to Twenty Flight Rock that he got the spot. Either way its a great song to learn when learning the rockabilly genre. Below are the tabs for this one. So whether youre just starting to learn the guitar or youre already a skilled guitarist, I hope these songs will get you strumming and picking away at the rockabilly music that came from the 50s and 60s. Learn to play them all and you will see your rock playing improve tenfold! Letâs rock again now! Are there any other rockabilly songs youd like to learn how to play on guitar? Share us with them in the comments below and well help you out! Post Author: Christopher S. Christopher S. teaches bass guitar, guitar, and composition in Jamaica Plain, MA. How to Reach Your Target GMAT Score
How to Reach Your Target GMAT Score GMAT test-takers generally possess a sense of what score they wish to achieve. Whether consciously or otherwise, almost everyone has a goal in mind. What everyone doesn't have, however, is a plan to reach that target. A marathoner does not simply hope for the best she trains and adjusts her strategy as she prepares for the race. And like that marathoner, you, as a GMAT test-taker, must begin by answering several key questions. What is your target score? In order to reach your goal, you must first set that goal. To do so, gather the necessary information, both from outside sources and within yourself. Investigate the schools that you hope to attend, or schools on the difficulty level that you hope to attend, to discover their requirements. Keep in mind that, while certain programs have firm GMAT score minimums, many have a range of results that they've accepted over the past admissions cycles. Research several of the schools you're interested in to determine the range you require. And do not forget there are always exceptions. You may have personal goals that you wish to achieve, for a number of reasons. It may be that you desire the highest mark among your siblings or a better score than you earned previously. Perhaps you believe that a certain score carries a certain prestige. Whatever the reason, and whether or not anyone else feels your reason is valid, it means your ideal score is more personal. Do not ignore it in the goal-setting process. Here are some great daily activities that can improve your GMAT skills. Where are you now? To reach your destination, it is helpful to understand where you are starting. Complete a GMAT diagnostic testimmediately. An initial score allows you to gauge how you are, or aren't, improving. To accurately determine where you stand, do a little studying on the format of the exam, the types of questions you will encounter (hello, Data Sufficiency!), and how scoring works before you sit for the diagnostic. This information can be found on mba.com, a site with which you have hopefully already registered. Dissect your diagnostic results, and determine what they mean. Identify the subject areas you are deficient in and those where you excelled. Note the sorts of questions that confused you, and even the more specific subsets of those types (e.g. inference questions as a type of Critical Reasoning problem). Analyze what mathematics topics were unclear, which were foreign, and which were just fine. The more specific your research, the better your preparation will be. If you've previously taken the test, then you already hold a starting score. What you don't have is an analysis of your performance beyond a result. Decide upon a manner to receive that; it is likely another exam with detailed feedback. How will you reach your goal? After you complete a diagnostic assessment, you may refine your target score (and perhaps set it higher). Now, you must develop a study plan. Incorporating any school courses you may be taking, tutoring sessions you may have scheduled, and other obligations you may have (e.g. work requirements or family events), outline a plan. Try to allot ample time every day to review for the GMAT. You may refine the actual activity that you do or subject that you cover during each work period, but have some sort of plan in place that you can adhere to. Having at least the time reserved well in advance will ensure that GMAT preparation isnt lost in the mix of all that your life involves. As part of that plan, budget time for frequent full-length tests. There is no substitute for completing a full-length sample exam. You will strengthen your test stamina, practice a variety of questions in the same adaptive manner as the GMAT, learn what errors you tend to make, and have time to correct them before the actual GMAT. You will also have a strong measure of your progress toward your target score. Schedule your test. Be very realistic about how much time you can devote to studying and how much work you must do to reach your goal. Determine your class schedule, and as part of your study plan, decide on a date that you will take the test. This ensures your preparation is concrete and focused. Here are 3 factors you should consider when scheduling a GMAT test date. At each of these steps, you must make refinements. You may need to budget more time to reviewing in order to reach your goal, or at least more closely follow your study plan. You may require more, or fewer tutoring hours. You might be studying the wrong subject areas. Your target score may prove too low. (If you are realistic at the outset, your target score should never prove too high. There is a way to reach your intended mark if you are realistic.) Always be honest, and keep your sights set on your target score, but remember that admissions offices assess your entire package. A great GMAT score is a goal; it does not absolutely define you.

7 Anxiety-busting Visualization Techniques for Introverts - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / 7 Anxiety-busting Visualization Techniques for Introverts - Introvert Whisperer 7 Anxiety-busting Visualization Techniques for Introverts Nearly one in five Americans are affected by an anxiety disorder each year, and way less than half of those receive treatment. It stands to reason. When youâre suffering from anxiety, the idea of leaving the house and telling your troubles to a stranger may not be that appealing â" particularly if youâre an introvert in the first place. Not everybody needs a doctor for their anxiety. But if itâs distressing you or making it impossible to live your life, itâs important to do so before things get worse. So how can you motivate yourself to pick up the phone, make that appointment, and then take the bus to the clinic? The answer lies in a set of visualization techniques that can help to calm your anxiety whether leaving the house is your goal or not. For example, you might start with the âblue lightâ technique. Close your eyes and imagine youâre enveloped in a pleasant ball of glowing blue light. Breathe the light in and allow it to fill your mind and body, picking up those grim, gray thoughts like toxins, and then breathe it all out. Keep going until thereâs no gray left. How about when youâre on the bus and everyone looks like they want to talk at you? Use your mind to escape. Imagine youâre lying on a warm, sandy beach. Imagine the smell of the air and the sound of the waves. Imagine sinking your feet down into the warm sand. Relax, and time your breathing to the rhythm of the waves. Donât miss your stop! Do these techniques work for you? Hereâs a handful more visualizations to help you through different anxiety-causing situations throughout the day â" and theyâre tailor-made to do by yourself! 1. How to Speak up When Youre Hurt at Work - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How to Speak up When Youre Hurt at Work - Introvert Whisperer How to Speak up When Youre Hurt at Work Sarah Landrum July 25, 2016 Communication, Dealing with Fear, Office Politics No responses Go to top If youâre naturally introverted, you might characteristically go about your job and scarcely speak up unless answering a direct question. However, when youâre injured at work, being assertive by letting someone know what happened is a necessity. Otherwise, you might end up with an untreated injury thatâs more severe than you first realized. There are several reasons why people feel nervous about telling their supervisors theyâve been hurt, including: A fear that people wonât believe the injury claim Uncertainty about whether their supervisors will care and take appropriate action Being under the impression they may lose their jobs or be subject to disciplinary action by disclosing their injuries Worry about the lost income they could be subjected to if their supervisors ordered them to stay home to recover Thinking fellow coworkers might feel jealous if the injuries require them to take time off work, but are eligible for workerâs compensation These stresses are all compounded if youâre very quiet and tend to go about your business without wanting to bother anyone. By following some actionable steps, it should be easier to keep your head clear and feel more confident about letting a superior know what happened. Know Your Companyâs Policy for Reporting Injuries Most companies have specific guidelines in place that instruct people how to file reports about being hurt at work. Unless the business has fewer than 10 employees or is part of an industry thatâs considered exempt, itâs required to report accidents on a particular form to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). If youâre not aware of the policy that applies to your workplace, getting educated offers a good opportunity to become more comfortable with being assertive. One easy thing to do is to speak up after getting some safety-related information at work. Simply say something like, âI think itâs great that you offer such clear instructions so everyone knows how to operate that piece of machinery safely. Out of curiosity, is there a procedure in place for reporting workplace accidents?â At the very least, youâll learn something new that might come in handy for yourself or someone else. Plus, your decision to ask a question benefits everyone within earshot who also might need to know the answer but didnât make that fact known. Notify the Appropriate Person Immediately As soon as the injury occurs, communicate with the designated individual who can help you file an accident report. If the injury is so severe that you are unable to notify that person yourself, send someone to do it for you. On the other hand, if you apparently arenât badly hurt, you may be tempted to finish your shift before notifying someone about what happened. Itâs essential to speak up about your injury right away rather than waiting. The timing of the accident is usually a crucial part of filling out an accident report. If you wait for days or even weeks before letting a supervisor know about the injury youâve suffered, thereâs a good chance youâll be asked to provide a valid reason for your delay. Be Aware of Your Average Income If the injury requires you to receive workerâs compensation payments, the amount you get is calculated based on the amount you earn. Laws vary by state, but in Pennsylvania, injured workers should receive 66 ?% of their average gross weekly wages through compensation payments. Eventually, youâll get a calculation from the workerâs compensation insurance company that describes the amount of compensation youâll periodically get while recovering from your injuries. Check the form carefully and assertively tell your workplace if a mistake has been made. If you know the portion about your earnings isnât accurate, it may be necessary to confirm the discrepancy by showing pay stubs to your employer. Fill out the Accident Form Thoroughly When officially documenting the injury, you may feel very timid about describing the extent of your injuries, and possibly even be tempted to downplay what happened. However, doing anything except providing an honest, full and accurate account of what occurred could negatively affect your ability to get compensation. Youâll also probably need to list the associated medical treatments youâve received, if applicable. Be sure to follow your employerâs instructions about whether you must only get treatment from particular healthcare providers. Document How the Accident Has Affected Your Ability to Work When following up your workerâs compensation claim, make sure to keep records that discuss how being hurt has adversely influenced your ability to do your job. It may be appropriate to focus on factors such as: Whether it takes longer than normal to do certain things If you experience pain that didnât occur before you got hurt Whether the pain has worsened, moved or otherwise changed since the accident How itâs become necessary for you to take more rest breaks than usual because of the injury By providing those kinds of details, youâll be able to give evidence to your workplace about how your life has been since getting injured. In the same way itâs essential to be truthful and thorough when documenting the injury, donât leave out pertinent details when describing how the injury impacts your life. Informing superiors about getting hurt at work is something that can cause even the most self-assured workers to feel uneasy. If youâre so anxious that you think itâd be better to keep quiet, reshape your perspective by remembering how your decision to disclose injuries promptly should make it easier to get the required treatment so you can get back on your feet as soon as possible, and hopefully not suffer any long-term effects.
